The Happiness Myth That’s Holding You Back

For as long as we can remember, we’ve been told that happiness is the ultimate goal. That one day, if we work hard enough, look pretty enough, or find the right person, we’ll finally reach that elusive place where everything feels perfect.

And when we don’t? We feel like we’ve failed.

Kinda like where I was halfway through 2024 after leaving my job, travelling around Australia in a van, and still feeling like I had to chase 'happiness' and that if I wasn't rushing and running all the time then I was missing out on it...

It’s no wonder so many women feel stuck and unfulfilled even when they have the job, the house, the husband, the life they thought they'd always wanted 🤯

We’ve been conditioned to believe happiness is a destination—when in reality, it’s just a fleeting chemical reaction in the body.

The real question is not how to be happy all the time—because that’s impossible— but rather, can we learn to navigate all of life’s ups and downs with confidence and resilience?

This conditioning about 'achieving' happiness didn’t occur overnight. Think back to the stories we grew up with in the 20th century—Disney took old Grimm fairytales, originally filled with lessons about life, death, consequences, and morality, and turned them into glossy, sugar-coated dreams where everything is magically solved by marrying a rich, handsome prince.

Take children's classic The Little Mermaid, for example. In the original fairytale, Ariel didn’t just lose her voice when she forfeited her identity—she experienced excruciating pain with every step she took on land. And in the end? The prince didn’t choose her, and she sacrificed herself, dissolving into sea foam. The lesson was never about getting the guy for a happily ever after; it was about the dangers of giving up who you are for someone else.

Or Cinderella, which originally wasn’t about a magical transformation, but rather about perseverance and resilience even through suffering. In the Brothers Grimm version, Cinderella’s stepsisters were so desperate to fit into the glass slipper that they mutilated their own feet, only to be exposed and punished by having their eyes pecked out. The story was never about waiting for a prince for happily ever after—it was a cautionary tale about deception and vanity.

Gone were the complex realities of life. Instead, we have superficial fairytales left with a singular message: happiness is something that happens to you when you find the one or achieve the perfect life.

But life isn’t about perfect endings—it’s about learning the skills to thrive through every season, happy or sad, because life is full of seasons and all of them inevitably happen to us at some stage.

The truth?

Happiness isn’t something you can chase or achieve. It’s something you createin the moment, in your body, at any time, by understanding how your energy, mindset, and actions impact your emotions.

And beyond that, what we really need are the tools to handle all of life—the joy, the heartbreak, the unexpected twists—so we can move through it all with confidence and conviction.
